Nneka Youth Foundation had the opportunity to work with the Google Employees in Afienya in the Ningo Prampram District, a community NNEKA works in, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
A five member Google team visited the Afienya D/A Basic B Junior High School in Afienya to take the pupils through basic I.T exposure and Career Mentoring Talks. The three Week program started on the 15th to the 29th of May, 2015. Apart from their main agenda, other interesting activities took place like Quizzes, Film making and Games.
This program was timely as the Form 3 students were preparing for their Basic Education Certificate Examination in ICT but have never had the opportunity to touch a computer. The Google team provided laptops which the pupils used for various activities including answering quiz question and other fun activities.
During the film making sessions, the children were put into smaller groups. One person from each group did the videoing. Some of the things captured were African games, African dance, singing etc. Also, greeting messages were filmed to be sent to other Google team members abroad. Other activities took place to keep the children’s interest.
A Durbar was held by the school in honour of the Team. In attendance were the Chiefs and elders of Afienya, the Afienya Circuit Supervisors, The Representative of Education Director of Ningo Prampram District, Nneka Youth Foundation, Teachers, Parents and Students. There was cultural display and exhibition of various act works by the school. The Google Team presented some items to the school and to some individual students.
The teachers and the children were very excited for this intervention to give basic practical knowledge to the children in preparedness for their examination.
