A 10 YEAR-OLD boy died and four others sustained severe injuries, when a 40-year-old fisherman, Kwabena Amakye, threw an improvised device at them for disturbing his siesta last Sunday.
The body of the deceased, Kweku Mensah, has been deposited at the Central Regional Hospital while another child, aged six, is in a very critical condition.
One of the children escaped unhurt.
The children, aged between six and 14, were said to be playing behind Amakye’s house at Moree, near Cape Coast. Amakye was angered by the noise the children were making when he was trying to catch some sleep.
He said he throw the explosive at them just to scare them away and that he took the action without the intention to cause harm.
Amakye was said to have told the children to leave the place because they were disturbing him, but they did not obey his instruction.
Amakye then got a rubber container, filled it with premix fuel and tore pieces of cement papers into the fuel and lit it.
He then throw the paper into the group of children behind his room.
He then bolted after the incident.
The police mounted a search and arrested him at his hideout behind the Cape Coast Castle.
All hands should be on deck to support Safe Child’s safety education towards behavioural change to prevent such occurrences.

Twenty thousand (20,000) Ghanaians have perished through road traffic accidents for the past ten (10) years, the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) , Mr. Noble John Appiah, has disclosed.
Ghana loses up to 1.6 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to road traffic crashes (RTCs) annually.
Within a period of ten years, the country has recorded a total of 125,857 road traffic crashes of which 20,503 died and 63,384 were seriously injured.

Safe Child’s innovative road safety sticker was unveiled on 30th March, 2012 at the launch of our “Child Road Safety Education Tour” at De Masters Academy. This is also one of our creative ways to raise funds for sustainability.
We are very much encouraged by the goodwill and commendation from corporate bodies in the insurance, automobile, oil marketing companies (OMCs) and manufacturers of child related products.
Dcryme (Award Winning Hiplife Artiste) and Ama K. Abebrese (Award Winning Actress) are our “Child Safety Icons.” These two were chosen by our member school children because of their good reputation, love for children and large following. We have come out with stickers with several road safety messages geared towards child safety.
Present at the unveiling ceremony were representatives from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Ministry of Women & Children’s Affairs (MOWAC), World Health Organisation (WHO), Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Education Service, TiGO, Department of Social Welfare and Playing for Change by Nafiye Bedirhanoglu.

Safe Child Ghana launched the Child Road Safety Awareness Tour (CRSAT) on 30th March, 2012 in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region. The objective was to sensitize motorist to respect other road users.
The Tour will extend to other parts of Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions. This Road Safety Awareness programme will take us through three regions with the active participation of our two Child Road Safety Ambassadors, Ama K. Abebrese (Award Winning Actress & TV Presenter) and Dcryme (Award Winning Hiplife Artiste).
