Safe Child Ghana, an NGO based in Tema has ended its Child Road Safety Education Tour at Oyarifa in the Greater Accra Region.

The novel Child Road Safety Education Tour was conducted in the Western, Central and Greater Accra regions with the support of Bayport Financial Services, Rana Motors and Volta River Authority.

The Road Safety programme involved one-on-one presentations on road safety rules and various media broadcasts spearheaded by the Founder of Safe Child, Michael Baabu. Safe Child also distributed road safety materials which were donated by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC).

The programme was targeted at children because the organisation considers children as strong agents of change. “To tackle our road safety menace, there is the need for an attitudinal and generational change and children are best placed as a powerful influencing group,” said Mrs. Eunice Gifty Baabu, CEO of Safe Child Ghana.

The Zonal Manager, Sales & Marketing West Africa at Rana Motors, Mr. Mishra Rakesh was enthusiastic about this new and effective concept of concentrating on our children who are our future. He said, “When it comes to road safety, the approach should be holistic as Safe Child Ghana has done. This is in line with our tagline, “We Make Your Road Safe.” Rana Motors is really glad to be part of this programme,” he concluded.

The Fiapre Circuit Court in the Sunyani West District in the Brong Ahafo Region has sentenced a 28-year-old unemployed man to 10 years’ imprisonment for attempting to sell his four-year-old son for GHC 9,000 (USD 4,787).

The accused, Emmanuel Nenapo, who had initially pleaded not guilt to the offence of human trafficking, changed his plea to guilty when he appeared before the court last Friday.

The court, presided over by Mr. Justice Benjamin Osei Yaw, subsequently convicted him on his own plea.

The court gave custody of the child to the Social Welfare Department.

Prosecuting, Chief Superintended Frederick Kwaku Adjei told the court that the complainant in the case was Evans Tabiri, a resident of the Sunyani Airport Residential Area, while the accused is also a resident of Chiraa in the Sunyani West District.

The prosecutor said about 9:00 am on December 3, 2012, Tabiri was trimming his flowers in his when approached by Nenapo, whom he had never met before.

Chief Supt. Adjei told the court that Nenapo then told the complainant that he wanted to discuss something with the complainant but he was a bit afraid to do so.

He said Tabiri told the accused to open up and tell him what the problem was.

The accused then told Tabiri that he had a four-year-old son whom he was offering for sale and wanted to know if the complainant would buy him.

The prosecutor said the complainant, who was initially surprised at the offer, later pretended to be interested.

After an initial agreement on the sale of the child, Nenapo left, but but the complainant, who quickly informed the police about the intention of the accused.

As child safety vigilantes, Safe Child annually holds a Child Safety Forum which focuses on various safety topics that plaque our society. This platform brings together our partners and stakeholders to deliberate on one major child safety issue  and to find solutions.

This year, we focused on Bullying. The programme was held on Tigo Day, November 28, 2012 at De Masters Academy in Ashaiman. Present at the function were Tigo Staff, Ghana Education Service, Ghana National Fire Service, pupils and teachers of De Masters Academy, Domestic Violence & Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Ghana Health Service, Reach for Change (R4C) and the media.

After viewing eight short films on bullying (courtesy: Friends, Sweden) , a discussion coordinated by Safe Child began. The discussion was full of energy, excitement and emotional as we all relate to the topic in all its forms.

After the forum, Safe Child collates data and streamline information on Bullying that will be used as a model to educate our member schools. We also forward our findings and suggestions to all stakeholders in child welfare to help improve policy formulation.
