From 2013 to 2014, Safe Child Ghana hosted “Child Safety Crusade,” an advocacy programme on radio, Happy98.9FM on Saturdays at 6:30-7:00am. We used this advocacy platform to achieve significant results.
We dedicated ten minutes of each programme to Road Safety Advocacy.
1. Safe Child Ghana advocated for the faded road markings on the Accra-Tema Motorway to be re-done. We are happy to say that the road markings on the Accra –Tema Motorway has been done after several calls on the authorities to fix the problem. These Road markings on the Motorway has helped greatly to reducing accidents.
2. We also serialized a “Watch These Things & Be Alert!” Campaign and took note of past Road Traffic occurrences that resulted in human injuries and death within the week. This campaign created awareness for both motorists and pedestrians. It increased their alertness as we did a postmortem on preventable road accidents occurrences.
3. We made a constant call on parents and guardians to desist from allowing younger children to cross roads alone to and from school. This call was headed to as more parents and guardians now walk their younger children to and from school.
4. We used the Child Safety Crusade programme to advocate against the frequent occurrence of the overloading of school children on vehicles.
5. We also launched a campaign dubbed, “Don’t overload your vehicle,” as “it damages the road and will put your LIFE in DANGER.”
Since 2014, Happy98.9FM continuous to call Safe Child Ghana to speak on road safety and other issues during Prime-time News.
